THE PREDICTION

World number 57 Jaume Munar has enjoyed some strong results this season and a couple of title wins on the Challenger circuit along with some quarter-finals on tour but it feels like there is more to give from his battling game. This looks a really tricky opener for the higher-ranked player as world number 80 Roberto Carballes Baena, also more at home on the clay, leads their head-to-head record 2-0 after wins at the Bastad Open in 2019 and the Chile Open a year later. Carballes Baena brings a poor 7-15 record into the US Open main draw but the 29-year-old has won in the first round of his last two appearances in New York. With sets likely to go both ways here this could be a decent candidate for a one-off punt on five sets. Otherwise, back Munar to win at least two of them as the just-about likelier victor on form this season.
