THE LOWDOWN
JAUME MUNAR
World number 72 Jaume Munar is coming into Melbourne in great form after losing to the runner-up of both his tournaments so far this season: Maxime Cressy in the quarter-finals of Melbourne 1 and Marin Cilic in the round of 16 of Adelaide 2. The 24-year-old reached a first ATP tour final last season in a close defeat to Pablo Carreno Busta at the Marbella Open on his favoured clay.
ASLAN KARATSEV
28-year-old Aslan Karatsev qualified for the Australian Open as a widely unknown member of the ATP Cup-winning Team Russia before promptly blasting his way through the draw to reach the semi-finals. It took eventual champion Novak Djokovic to stop him last year and without the Serb in the draw this time around Karatsev should be considered a genuine dark horse for the title in Melbourne, especially as he won the Sydney Tennis Classic this week with a victory over Andy Murray.
THE PREDICTION
Karatsev is certainly a man to watch this Australian Open campaign as he comes into the scene of his stunning tour breakthrough one year on with three titles to his name and even more self-belief. The 28-year-old is riding a four-match winning streak of the highest level but the curse of a previous title win could come into play here as it so often does on the ATP tour. Munar and Karatsev shared four sets in a win for the Russian in the first round of the US Open last season and the sensible option is to take the 18th seed as outright winner here even though he should do this in three.
