JASMINE PAOLINI – First Grand Slam quarter-final
28-year-old Jasmine Paolini came back from a set down to eventually comfortably beat Elina Avanesyan on Monday, conceding just one game after dropping the first. The Italian is through to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time just five months on from making her second week debut in Melbourne.
Paolini set a career-high WTA world ranking of 12th after a shock run to the Dubai Masters title in February, although she rode her luck a little after Elena Rybakina was forced to pull-out of their quarter-final fixture.
ELENA RYBAKINA – 2022 Wimbledon champion, quarter-finalist here in 2021
World number four Elena Rybakina looks in the sort of shape that could cause Iga Swiatek problems down the line at Roland-Garros. The 24-year-old is through to her second quarter-final in Paris, first doing so with a stunning win over Serena Williams here three years ago, without yet dropping a set after an assured result over Elina Svitolina.
Rybakina beat Swiatek en-route to the Stuttgart Open title in April, also beating Jasmine Paolini in the quarter-finals, and she is the only player to hold a positive record over the defending champion left in the tournament.
JASMINE PAOLINI VS ELENA RYBAKINA PREDICTION
Jasmine Paolini will be a popular underdog in this biggest match of her life on Wednesday, with the sort of hard-grafting game that lends itself to entertaining rallies on clay. However, her opponent is unlikely to allow for many lengthy points in her current rich vein of form. Elena Rybakina was pushed hard by Paolini in their recent clash at the Stuttgart Open but the Italian’s win in their 2-1 head-to-head record came via an injury at the Cincinnati Masters last August, from a set down, to suggest this is the end of her best run yet.
Rybakina is yet to drop a set and yet the enigmatic Kazakh certainly has an extra gear to find in an increasingly promising campaign. Back the fourth seed to win in straight sets.
JASMINE PAOLINI VS ELENA RYBAKINA TIP: ELENA RYBAKINA TO WIN 2-0
