THE LOWDOWN
JANNIK SINNER
World number eight Jannik Sinner laboured to a straight-sets victory over Daniel Elahi Galan on Sunday but the Italian is through to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon for a second-successive season nonetheless. The 21-year-old took the first two sets from Novak Djokovic at this stage last summer before defeat to the eventual champion and he similarly took US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz to five at the same stage later in the year.
ROMAN SAFIULLIN
25-year-old Roman Safiullin will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 43rd after coming back from a set down to beat Denis Shapovalov on Sunday. The Russian was a junior number one with a bright future but his momentum suffered more than most during the covid-19 pandemic, only making his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open in 2021. Safiullin upset 20th seed Roberto Bautista Agut in five sets in the first round to set up this career-best run, conceding just one set since.
THE PREDICTION
Jannik Sinner’s run to the quarter-finals has been decidedly kind this summer, aided by the loss of Taylor Fritz from his portion of the draw, but making the last eight with just one set conceded remains impressive. The Italian is the clear favourite to come through here but Roman Safiullin is a powerful and deceptively tricky player on his day, well capable of taking this match to five or even the upset if Sinner does not improve a little on his last two matches. Sinner beat the Russian in straight sets at the ATP Cup last season but Safiullin is certainly still something of an anomaly on tour with an unknowable ceiling at this moment in time. Four sets seem about as likely as three but Sinner can be backed to find a way through to his first ever semi-final at this level.
