THE LOWDOWN

21-year-old Jannik Sinner came of age on Tuesday night with a first, thrilling victory over world number one Novak Djokovic in three sets. The Italian delighted a partisan crowd in Turin to all-but mathematically seal his route through to the semi-finals as Green Group winner but this is still a very live match against Holger Rune. Sinner is up to a career-high ATP world ranking of fourth after winning three top titles in quick succession in recent months, with a maiden Masters trophy picked up in Toronto and two quality 500s claimed in Beijing and Vienna – both at Daniil Medvedev’s expense.

World number eight Holger Rune has been given a huge boost after Stefanos Tsitsipas retired early in the first set of their clash on Tuesday afternoon. The 20-year-old took Novak Djokovic to three sets before defeat in his opener on Sunday, just over a week on from doing so in the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters, and that set could prove crucial if he can stun Sinner here – with Djokovic facing a must-win match against Tsitsipas’ replacement Hubert Hurkacz. Rune beat Djokovic to the Paris Masters title this time last season but he has claimed just one title this season, defending his Munich crown, in what has certainly been a season of two halves.

THE PREDICTION

Jannik Sinner will return to Centre Court a hero on Thursday after an incredible performance against world number one Novak Djokovic. It is probably a good thing that this match is still live to keep motivation high but Sinner’s strength is in his mentality and he can be backed to always bring his best, particularly on home soil. Holger Rune is totally capable of causing an upset here as he leads the Italian 2-0 in their head-to-head after coming back from a set down to stun him at the monte-Carlo Masters this April but the two have gone in separate directions, form-wise, since the start of the hardcourt swing. Both of their previous matches have seen three sets, with Sinner taking the first in each, to offer a useful combination here but otherwise back Sinner to make it 3-0 as he continues to thrive as Italy’s favoured son.

BETTING TIP: JANNIK SINNER TO WIN
