THE LOWDOWN

JANNIK SINNER

World number four Jannik Sinner put in an incredible display of composure to snap defending champion Novak Djokovic’s 10-match semi-final win streak in Melbourne, making full use of the Serb’s poor start before recovering masterfully from dropping the third set to win in four. The 22-year-old has now beaten Djokovic in three of their last four matches to close in 4-3 in their head-to-head record but to do so on Rod Laver Arena, 10-time Australian Open Djokovic’s favourite court in the world, is his crowning achievement so far. Sinner is through to his maiden Grand Slam final on Sunday to cap off a remarkable 12 months on tour, improving exponentially with prestigious titles in Toronto, Beijing and Vienna as well as his first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon last summer.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV

World number three Daniil Medvedev came back from a set down to stun Alexander Zverev in a four-hour marathon match on Friday. The 27-year-old is through to the fifth Grand Slam final of his career, all on hardcourts, and hoping that it will be “third time lucky” after losing his first two in Melbourne in back-to-back seasons, to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and Rafael Nadal in 2022. Medvedev beat Djokovic in straight sets to claim his only major title to date, with a defeat to Nadal in New York in his maiden Grand Slam final back in 2019.

THE PREDICTION

Jannik Sinner caused perhaps the biggest shock of this most unpredictable of Australian Opens by stunning 10-time champion, and four-time defending champion (not including the year he was unable to feature), Novak Djokovic. It will be the first Men’s Australian Open final without one of the ‘Big Three’ since Marat Safin beat Lleyton Hewitt to the title in 2005 and one of only four Grand Slam finals not to feature Messrs Djokovic, Federer or Nadal in the past decade. The Italian has blossomed over the past 12 months to look every bit Carlos Alcaraz equal and he will aim to emulate the Spaniard here by attempting to win his first major title on his debut.

Daniil Medvedev leads Sinner 6-3 in their head-to-head but it should be noted that Sinner has won each of their last three encounters, since October, to look in pole position at this moment. The youngster has dropped just one set all fortnight to bring a considerable amount of extra energy into this contest, their first over five sets, and Medvedev has already admitted to exerting himself more than ever before to make a major final – with Friday’s his third five-set slog of the campaign and a second from two sets down. The Russian lost to Nadal from two sets up here two years ago to make Rod Laver Arena a stage of some real discomfort and he faces an in-form rising superstar with no baggage to speak of at this level.

Medvedev will give his all at making it third time lucky here but his rather limp exit to Djokovic at this stage of the US Open last Autumn springs to mind. It is hard to go against the Russian after his indefatigable display against Zverev but Jannik Sinner has played the best tennis in Melbourne this fortnight and he has yet to dig as deep as he can. Back the Italian to make history.
