THE LOWDOWN

JANNIK SINNER

World number eight Jannik Sinner started poorly against an impressive Quentin Halys on Friday but he coped well from a set down to win through in four. The 21-year-old has reached the quarter-finals of all four Grand Slams once each, doing so here last summer via an incredible four-set victory over Carlos Alcaraz that felt like the beginning of a new generation’s rivalry. Sinner went on to take the first two sets from Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals before defeat to the eventual champion and he similarly took Alcaraz to five sets before defeat at the US Open later that summer.

DANIEL ELAHI GALAN

27-year-old Daniel Elahi Galan brought a woeful 2-12 record into Wimbledon with no form to speak of whatsoever but the Colombian will now break the top 60 on tour for the first time after an excellent five-set victory over Mikael Ymer. Galan upset 24th seed Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round to usurp the Japanese’s kind draw, with Ymer’s shock victory over Taylor Fritz in the third paving the way for the Colombian to reach the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time.

THE PREDICTION

Jannik Sinner struggled with his game early-on against Quentin Halys but he should improve in time for this kind round of 16 draw. Daniel Elahi Galan is capable of the occasional upset, with his victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas at the US Open last summer proof of that, but producing a surprise gets harder with each passing round as we approach the business end of this tournament. Sinner beat Galan in straight sets in their only previous meeting in 2021 but Galan has played well enough this week to warrant caution, particularly as his confidence will be sky-high after exorcising such a poor season so far. Take Sinner to win outright with four sets about as likely as three.
