World number eight Felix Auger-Aliassime put in a solid opening performance to beat Alexander Ritschard in four sets on Monday. The 22-year-old reached the semi-finals here last season before losing to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev but there was a marked improvement in his five-set defeat to the Russian in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open back in January. The Canadian won his first ATP title at the ninth attempt at the Rotterdam Open back in February but there is still plenty of room for improvement, namely in closing out matches and winning easier against the smaller fry. World number 53 Jack Draper should no longer be considered an outsider in that category after the 20-year-old ousted in-for Emil Rusuuvuori in straight sets on his US Open debut. The Brit recently stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas on his way to the quarter-finals of the Canada Masters, where he lost to eventual champion Pabo Carreno Busta, and he came gut-wrenchingly close to a first tour final at the Eastbourne International back in June.
A first meeting between two hard-hitters should be a thrilling watch on Wednesday. Felix Auger-Aliassime becomes more dangerous with every passing round as a player who can sometimes take some time warming up but sets seem likely to go both ways here as Jack Draper continues his fast rise up the rankings with a mature, fierce playstyle that suits these occasions. The Brit did seem to run out of steam at this stage of Wimbledon, though, and the longer the match plays the better chance Auger-Aliassime has of winning. Back the Canadian to win outright, probably in four.
