THE LOWDOWN
20-year-old Jack Draper first came onto the scene at last season’s Queen’s Club on grass but the rising star has enjoyed a very convincing full breakthrough season in 2022. Draper set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 41st this week after a solid couple of week son tour, with victories over the likes of Felix Auger-Aliassime at the US Open and Stefanos Tsitsipas on his way to the quarter-finals of the Canada Masters suggesting he can break into the top 20 within the next few years. Draper came perilously close to making a first tour final this summer as he lost in three sets to Maxime Cressy in the semi-finals at the Eastbourne International.
20-year-old Dominic Stricker has the potential to be this week’s surprise package after an ultimately quiet season on tour, with his initial breakthrough coming last summer. The Swiss set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 111th after some recent impressive results over the likes of Botic van de Zandschulp and Maxime Cressy whilst elsewhere this season he has enjoyed plenty of success at Challenger level.
THE PREDICTION
Jack Draper is one of the favourites to win the Next Gen ATP Finals this weekend alongside home favourite Lorenzo Musetti and Brandon Nakashima but this is no gimme early-on. Dominic Stricker has already proved himself better against tougher opposition in recent strong runs in Antwerp and Basel, the latter of which saw him take Pablo Carreno Busta to three sets before a tight defeat. There is plenty of space for sets apiece here in a shortened five-set format, so back Draper to edge this first encounter outright.
