THE PREDICTION
This should be a fascinating first tour-level meeting between former British number one Andy Murray and future British number one Jack Draper. The pair are currently ranked side-by-side with Murray at world number 55 and Draper at 56 but both are playing at a level far higher than that. 35-year-old Murray coped well with the last-minute fixture change to beat Radu Albot on Saturday, claiming his first straight-sets victory on tour this season to boost his already emboldening confidence. The former world number one finished runner-up to Daniil Medvedev at the Qatar Open two weeks ago to suggest he will need top 20 opposition at the least to oust him here at Indian Wells but 21-year-old Draper has exhibited that sort of tennis over the past six months to stun the likes of Felix Auger-Aliassime, Stefanos Tsitsipas and more recently two Australian Open semi-finalists in Tommy Paul and Karen Khachanov in Adelaide.
Murray beat Draper via a 10-point deciding tiebreak at the Battle of the Brits exhibition in December but this will be a truer first encounter at a high level. Back Murray to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors or consider the three set option here given the elder Brit’s recent results.
