THE LOWDOWN

Host nation Italy provided another day to celebrate in Bologna on Friday with Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini beating their Argentine opposition to reach the Davis Cup Finals with a round to spare. Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini lost the dead rubber doubles match in three sets to a solid pair in Maximo Gonzalez and Horacio Zeballos but it did feel that the Italians could have made it 6-0 so far with more on the line. Berrettini’s straight-sets victory over Sebastian Baez is a welcome return to some imperious form, with the 26-year-old struggling at times in recent months since contracting covid-19 at Wimbledon.

Sweden got their second tie underway well with Elias Ymer making it two wins from two with a straight-sets victory over Borna Gojo. Mikael Ymer played well but ultimately fell short against a top player in Borna Coric to set-up a really tough decider in the doubles. The Ymer brothers teamed up well but Croatia’s Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic are a serious trump card to hold in these conditions and they sealed the tie 2-1 with a straight-sets victory.

THE PREDICTION

Sweden’s Mikael and Elias Ymer have put in a proper shift this week for their nation but this away tie against hosts Italy in Bologna is possibly the toughest challenge in all the groups. Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini should have more than enough to oust Mikael and Elias, respectively, to make backing Italy to win the tie the clear option here. However, the brothers could pair up well against Fognini and Bolelli, who have already lost one match this week with the pressure off, making 2-1 in favour of Italy the shrewd but ultimately too risky move.
