THE LOWDOWN

IGA SWIATEK

World number one Iga Swiatek conceded just three games to Elena-Gabriela Ruse on Wednesday in her first match since winning the Stuttgart Open last month. The 20-year-old missed out the Madrid Open for a breather after winning four-consecutive WTA titles, including three Masters trophies at the Qatar Open, Indian Wells and the Miami Open. Swiatek is the defending champion in Rome after winning her first Masters title here last season and she will enter Roland-Garros as the favourite later this month as a former teenage champion from 2020.

VICTORIA AZARENKA

World number 16 Victoria Azarenka is yet to drop a set at the Italian Open after an assured victory over Camila Osorio on Wednesday. The former world number one is a two-time Grand Slam champion after winning back-to-back Australian Open titles in 2011 and 2012, with a run to the final here a year later. 32-year-old Azarenka’s most recent title came at the Western & Southern Open in 2020, her seventh Masters trophy.

THE PREDICTION

Iga Swiatek is the clear favourite to defend her Italian Open title this weekend but she will have to beat a former finalist in Victoria Azarenka to reach the last eight. The world number one beat Azarenka in three sets at Adelaide 1 back in January, with Azarenka winning their first encounter at the US Open back in 2020. A first meeting on clay favours the Pole and, despite Azarenka’s strong showing so far in Rome, Swiatek can be backed to take this in two.
