THE PREDICTION

World number one Iga Swiatek is the two-time defending champion here in Doha, winning it as a Masters event in 2022 and as a WTA 500 event last season. The 22-year-old already has a remarkable 17 WTA titles to her name after bursting into world-beating form at the start of 2022, during which she won six trophies on the spin across a 37-match winning streak, and four of those are major titles after she won Roland-Garros for the third tine last summer.

Swiatek will be eager to make a statement here in Doha after a shock exit to Linda Noskova in the third round of the Australian Open last month but she faces a tough opener against in-form Sorana Cirstea, who comfortably beat Sloane Stephens on Sunday to add to huge results over Maria Sakkari and Caroline Garcia last week in Abu Dhabi. The Romanian is desperately seeking a first foray into the top 20, which would be a remarkable feat at 33 years old, but she has drawn the shortest straw here. Swiatek leads their head-to-head 2-0 and she can be backed to make it 3-0 here, although straight sets would be a riskier call than usual given her last result.

TIP: IGA SWIATEK TO WIN
