THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek is the defending champion here in Stuttgart from her incredible run of six titles won on the spin last season amongst a 37-match winning streak. The 21-year-old has so far defended Qatar and Indian Wells but conceded Dubai and the Miami Open to stiff competition, although her greatest foe on court this season has been her fitness after a rib injury saw her withdraw from Miami. This promises to be a thrilling match on Thursday if their previous encounters are anything to go by as Qinwen Zheng pushed the Pole close twice in two three-set defeats last season at Roland-Garros and the San Diego Open – both of which Swiatek went on to win. World number 25 Zheng beat Alycia Parks in straight sets on Monday to get her Stuttgart campaign underway and so far the rising Chinese star has looked a threat on all surfaces. Considering Swiatek has not played on clay yet this season, and not at all since the 18th of March, take the Pole to win outright here instead of her customary straight sets.
