THE LOWDOWN
IGA SWIATEK
World number one Iga Swiatek conceded eight games against Danka Kovinic on Saturday, double what she conceded in her opening two rounds. The fact that the 2020 Roland-Garros champion still came through in straight sets, and that conceding games is something of a shock, is testament to the sheer domination she has exerted on the WTA tour. Swiatek takes a 31-match winning streak into the second week in Paris with five titles won on the spin without defeat, including a first defended title at the Italian Open earlier this month. 20-year-old Swiatek has reached at least the round of 16 in each of her four appearances at Roland-Garros as well as in each of her last six Grand Slam appearances.
QINWEN ZHENG
19-year-old Qinwen Zheng has been promising a run like this all season long after impressive at the start of the year with a run to the semi-finals of Melbourne 1 and plenty of success on the ITF circuit already. The Chinese prospect overcame a hampered Simona Halep on Thursday before seeing out a strange contest with Alize Cornet in the third round on Saturday, winning all nine games before her opponent was forced to retire.
THE PREDICTION
Qinwen Zheng is a really exciting teenager coming through on the WTA tour and she has performed exceptionally well this week on her Roland-Garros debut as well as riding her luck at times against back-to-back hampered opponents. The 19-year-old looks set to be Iga Swiatek’s toughest foe so far in Paris but after a mini-warning against Danka Kovinic the world number one can probably turn it up a notch to blast through. Alison Riske played well against Swiatek this week and won just two games for her trouble. Back the Pole to win in straight sets here and you could consider taking less than 16.5 games in the match.
