THE LOWDOWN

World number two Iga Swiatek can return to the top of the sport if she wins the WTA Finals and Aryna Sabalenka does not make it out of her group, although the Belarussian looks set to do so a set up in her delayed match with Elena Rybakina. 22-year-old Swiatek is yet to drop a set this week to make it eight wins on the spin after winning the Beijing Masters last month and she has looked the least affected by tough conditions in Cancun. Swiatek leads Ons Jabeur 4-2 in their head-to-head, including victory at the US Open last summer – one of her now four Grand Slam titles.

World number seven Ons Jabeur kept her WTA Finals hopes alive with a straight-sets victory over Marketa Vondrousova, getting revenge for that shock defeat in the Wimbledon final. but she needs the Czech to do her favour in the early match against Coco Gauff. The 29-year-old has not looked her free-flowing best since Wimbledon, where she stunned both Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka before another shock defeat in the final, but she did manage to turn some poor form around to win her fifth WTA title at the Ningbo Open last month.

THE PREDICTION

There is a slight chance at an upset here given that Iga Swiatek is already through to the semi-finals in Cancun but a lot of this match will rely on the earlier fixture. If Marketa Vondrousova beats Coco Gauff to leave the door ajar for Jabeur then we could have a proper thriller on our hands here but a win for Gauff makes this a dead rubber on head-to-heads after the American trounced her earlier this week. Backing Swiatek to win at least a set is the suitably cautious way to counter both outcomes but it is likely that the Pole comes through either way.

BETTING TIP: Iga Swiatek to win.
