THE PREDICTION

21-year-old Marta Kostyuk will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 26th after reaching her first Masters semi-final on tour, with January’s run to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open suggesting she was ready for a first foray into the top 20 this season. The Ukrainian has beaten back-to-back Russians, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Anastasia Potapova, in straight sets for two excellent results in their own right but truly remarkable results given the weight of her war-torn nation on her shoulders. It will be hard for Kostyuk to gather that same intensity in this likely good-natured encounter with world number one Iga Swiatek, who has been more vocal than most about the plights of Ukrainian players on tour, but expect a competitive match here as Kostyuk clearly has the combative game for these conditions in the desert.

However, 22-year-old Swiatek’s front-foot style is even better acquainted with Indian Wells – particularly when it gets too windy for her peers – and she looks the champion elect on Sunday after reaching the semi-finals with just 14 games conceded. Swiatek beat Kostyuk in straight sets at Roland-Garros in 2021 but both players have improved significantly to suggest this could see three. Back Swiatek to win outright inside an accumulator but straight sets should, realistically, do it.

TIP: IGA SWIATEK TO WIN 2-0
