THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek came back from a set down to beat Qinwen Zheng on Thursday, ultimately comfortably with just two games conceded across sets two and three. The 22-year-old has found herself more challenged this summer than we had become accustomed to seeing over the previous 12 months but she is gearing up for a first US Open title defence in New York late this month and it may not hurt to come in a little more battle-hardened. World number 10 Marketa Vondrousova won her maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last month with victory over Ons Jabeur, whom Swiatek beat to lift the US Open last summer. The 24-year-old is yet to drop a set this week in a thoroughly impressive reaction to snapping a nine-match winning streak in Montreal last week and this could be a proper thriller on Friday. Swiatek swept the Czech aside three years ago in Paris, in the first round of her fated run to her first of now four Grand Slam titles, but both players are totally different prospects here. Back Swiatek to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors or risk the outright call. Do not underestimate Vondrousova’s subtle ability to frustrate the best players on tour.
