THE LOWDOWN
IGA SWIATEK
World number one Iga Swiatek was tested well in a straight-sets victory over Lauren Davis to reach the round of 16 at the US Open without dropping a set. The 21-year-old made it two Grand Slam titles at Roland-Garros this summer at the end of an incredible winning streak that saw her claim six WTA titles on the spin, including four Masters titles in Qatar, Indian Wells, Miami and Rome. Swiatek has never reached the quarter-finals at the US Open but a run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open this January suggests she can go all the way.
JULE NIEMEIER
23-year-old Jule Niemeier will break the top 80 on tour for a first time no matter the outcome here after a stunning run to the round of 16 on her US Open debut, defeating fellow rising star Qinwen Zheng on Saturday. The German is one match away from emulating an incredible debut at Wimbledon back in July, where she first burst onto the scene with a run to the quarter-finals that should have seen her ranked much higher already were it not for the controversial points ban.
THE PREDICTION
This could be the match of the round between world number one Iga Swiatek and rising star Jule Niemeier with nothing to lose in their first meeting on tour. The Pole is the younger player in age alone as a two-time Roland-Garros champion who broke this century’s winning streak record this season with 37 wins on the spin but she has been slightly more fallible in recent months. As impressive as Niemeier has been, she has yet to play a top player in form after grabbing a first top 10 win over an out-of-sorts Anett Kontaveit at Wimbledon. Back Swiatek to edge this outright with three sets likelier than two here.
