American number one Jessica Pegula beat Madison Keys in straight sets on Friday to maintain her strong challenge for the San Diego title but she will be sick of the sight of her next opponent. World number one Iga Swiatek blasted past Coco Gauff on Friday in a more assured performance than her three-set opener against Qinwen Zheng and the Pole leads Pegula 3-1 in their head-to-head record after winning all three of their meetings this season. Notably, the winner of all four of their matches have gone on to claim the title, with Pegula beating Swiatek at the Citi Open in 2019 and Swiatek claiming wins at the Miami Open, Roland-Garros and US Open this season. Pegula has failed to take a set form the Pole all season long but this looks her best opportunity yet with the crowd fully behind her in San Diego. Backing Swiatek to win outright is not as cautious as it first appears, even though the world number one will probably end up blasting her way to the title.
