THE LOWDOWN
IGA SWIATEK
World number one Iga Swiatek was part of a thrilling first set on Monday that was eventually snatched in a tiebreak by 19-year-old Qinwen Zheng before an injury saw the Chinese prospect fade to defeat. 20-year-old Swiatek could be the better for a first dropped set at Roland-Garros as a mini warning, although her first Roland-Garros title was won without dropping a set back in 2020. The Pole is riding an incredible 32-match winning streak that includes four Masters titles won at Qatar Open, Miami Open, Indian Wells and the Italian Open – the latter of which she successfully defended.
JESSICA PEGULA
World number 11 Jessica Pegula will break the top 10 of the WTA world rankings for a first time next Monday after coming back from a set down to beat Irina-Camelia Begu on Monday. The 28-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for successive seasons back in January before defeat to eventual champion Ash Barty but this is her first quarter-final at Roland-Garros. Pegula can become the new American number one with one more victory, although her current trajectory suggest she will leapfrog world number eight Danielle Collins soon in any case.
THE PREDICTION
With so many seeds tumbling from the draw early-on it could be a blessing in disguise for Iga Swiatek to have struggled against Qinwen Zheng to ward off any chance of complacency. The 20-year-old faces the highest remaining seed in Jessica Pegula for a first meeting with the hard-grafter on clay, a surface that should favour the Pole. Pegula won the first meeting between these two on her way to the Washington Open back in 2019 but Swiatek levelled things up at 1-1 earlier this season, beating the American in straight sets at the Miami Open. This could come closer but Pegula looks set to lose to another eventual champion at successive majors. Back Swiatek to win outright.
