IGA SWIATEK Three-time Roland-Garros champion, aiming for third in a row

World number one Iga Swiatek extended her remarkable record over Coco Gauff, who will become the new world number two on Monday, to 11-1 with another assured straight-sets victory on Thursday. The 23-year-old has lost just once at Roland-Garros since bursting onto the scene with victory here in 2020 and that was whilst hampered by an injury in the quarter-finals the following summer, with this set to be her third title on the spin in Paris and a fifth major overall.

Swiatek won both Masters events coming into Paris to take an 18-match winning streak into her fifth major final and she has won each of her previous four, contributing to an incredible 21-4 record in finals on tour.

JASMINE PAOLINI First Grand Slam final

Perennial underdog Jasmine Paolini has consistently exceeded expectations over the past 12 months in an astounding rise from mid-100 obscurity to set a new career-high WTA world ranking of seventh on Monday. The 28-year-old could, of course, rise as high as fifth with an earth-shattering shock win here on Saturday but just reaching a major final, having never progressed past the second round anywhere before 2024, is a mammoth achievement.

Paolini overcame an out-of-sorts Mirra Andreeva in straight sets on Thursday to back-up a tighter win over Elena Rybakina, also oddly underpowered, in the quarter-finals but it would be remiss not to attribute the Italian as one of the factors in her opponent’s struggles on court. A surprise run to the Dubai Masters title in February brought her record in finals up to 2-3 but this is by far the biggest occasion of her career.

IGA SWIATEK VS JASMINE PAOLINI PREDICTION

World number one Iga Swiatek looks the overwhelming favourite to win her fourth Roland-Garros title on Saturday but Jasmine Paolini will be backed well by a crowd desperate not to see a whitewash.

We have seen time and again, though, that what the crowd wants and what Swiatek produces on her favoured surface are two totally different things and – as Paris did with Rafael Nadal for the middle period of his dominant era here – they will eventually celebrate the Pole for the champion she is.

Swiatek has beat Sofia Kenin in 2020, Coco Gauff in 2022 and Karolina Muchova here last summer to lift her three previous titles but it is unlikely that Paolini can offer the same resistance that Muchova managed in three sets last time around.

Swiatek is quite simply the best female player on clay we have ever seen, with a game totally suited to maximising every ounce of the red stuff in Paris, and she can be backed win in straight sets to lift a fifth Grand Slam title.

IGA SWIATEK VS JASMINE PAOLINI TIP: IGA SWIATEK TO WIN 2-0
