THE LOWDOWN

World number one Iga Swiatek is yet to win a tournament in the second-half of the season but that should be no concern yet to the 21-year-old, who claimed her second Roland-Garros title back in June. The Pole won 37 matches on the spin from February to claim six-straight tournaments, including four Masters titles from Qatar, Indian Wells, Miami and Rome. Swiatek reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open back in January before losing to Danielle Collins in three and she will be aiming to at least better her round of 16 exit here last season.

THE PREDICTION

World number 57 Jasmine Paolini has drawn perhaps the shortest straw of them all in Iga Swiatek, particularly as the Pole may feel she needs to prove something to herself and the world in these first few matches in New York. Paolini lost in comprehensive straight sets in their only previous meeting back in 2018 and backing Swiatek to win in two, in a match that sees under 16.5 games, looks a suitable combination here.
