THE PREDICTION

World number one and defending Indian Wells champion Iga Swiatek overcame former champion Bianca Andreescu in two well-contested sets on Monday. The 21-year-old has reached the final in each of her last two tournaments on tour but a straight-sets defeat to Barbora Krejcikova at the Dubai Masters last time out scuppered her chances at emulating the incredible 37-match winning streak she made last season, where she won six WTA titles including four Masters events and Roland-Garros. Amongst that run Swiatek also won the Stuttgart Open in which she met former world number 10 Emma Raducanu for the first time, winning their quarter-final in straight sets. Current world number 77 Raducanu has endured injury after injury over the past 18 or so months but all of a sudden she has managed to string three wins together for only the second time since her miraculous US Open title-winning campaign in 2021.

A three-set victory over 13th seed Beatriz Haddad-Maia is hugely encouraging for the Brit but she has drawn the shortest straw on tour here and despite her incredible ability to deceive and defuse the best players it would be a surprise, at this moment in time, to see anything other than another straight-sets victory for Swiatek. The last two players to win the US Open meet here for what could end up an epic second edition of what could prove one of the defining rivalries of the next decade in the sport. On this occasions, though, back world number one Swiatek to win in two.
