THE LOWDOWN

IGA SWIATEK

World number one Iga Swiatek made short work of Daria Kasatkina in straight sets on Thursday to reach her second Grand Slam final in Paris in three years. The Pole burst onto the scene with a storming run to the 2020 Roland-Garros title as a teenager and now just 21 years old she finds herself back where she began, this time the clear favourite at the top of the sport and riding an incredible 34-match winning streak. Swiatek has won four Masters titles and the Stuttgart Open back-to-back, with her last defeat coming to Jelena Ostapenko almost four months ago.

COCO GAUFF

18-year-old Coco Gauff will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 13th after overcoming an impressive Martina Trevisan in straight sets on Thursday. The teenager set her best Grand Slam showing here last season with a run to the quarter-finals ended by eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova but she has smashed that this season with an incredible run to a first Grand Slam final. Gauff burst onto the scene at Wimbledon in 2019 where she beat Venus Williams in a clear changing of the guard on her way to the round of 16.

THE PREDICTION

This is a blockbuster occasion between two players set to battle it out at the top of the Women’s game for the next decade. As much as 2020 champion Iga Swiatek is the favourite here, huge credit must be paid to Coco Gauff for reaching a Grand Slam final so soon after becoming an overnight star at 15 years old back at Wimbledon in 2019. The American has taken everything in her stride so far and she can clearly emulate the levels of her idols in years to come. It would be a surprise to see her win here but it would be hugely deserved nonetheless.

Swiatek beat Coco Gauff in straight sets at the Miami Open back in March and again in their first meeting in the semi-finals of last season’s Italian Open, where she went on to win. The Pole has been the clear favourite for the title from the outset of the tournament but Gauff has risen to every challenge so far and this could be a proper thriller if she manages to snatch the first set. However, the more realistic outcome here is another dominative display by the world number one as she continues to separate herself from the rest of the WTA. Back Swiatek to win this in straight sets for a second Roland-Garros title.
