THE PREDICTION

This promises to be the best battle yet between clear present and future rivals on the WTA tour, with Iga Swiatek beating Coco Gauff for the third time this summer to win Roland-Garros. World number one Swiatek is yet to drop a set to Coco Gauff but the American is still, remarkably, only 18 years old and visibly improving with every passing month on tour. Swiatek dropped a set on Thursday against in-form Qinwen Zheng for an impressive opener after losing her first final since 2019 last weekend at the Ostrava Open whilst Gauff overcame former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu in an electrifying match. The teenager will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of seventh if she matches Paula Badosa’s run this week and she looks almost certain to qualify for the WTA Finals in both singles and doubles at the end of the season like her idols Venus and Serena before her. Three sets seem likelier than two given Swiatek’s recent matches but the Pole should still find a way through at this moment in time.
