THE LOWDOWN

World number one Iga Swiatek has been the dominant force on the WTA tour all season long, with a 37-match winning streak earlier this spring seeing her claim six WTA titles on the spin including a second Roland-Garros title. The 21-year-old has eight titles in 2022 so far but she looks set to make that nine come the weekend if she continues in her current form, with straight-set victories over both Caroline Garcia and Daria Kasatkina seeing her take the top seed in the semi-finals. Swiatek’s current winning streak is at six matches now but she has reached the final I her last three tournaments including the US Open, where she claimed her third Grand Slam title.

18-year-old Coco Gauff’s achievements at making her WTA Finals debut in both singles and doubles is based on consistent high performance all season long but the teenager has, understandably, looked fairly jaded at Fort Worth. The world number four reached her first Grand Slam final this summer, finishing runner-up to next opponent Iga Swiatek, and she will start 2023 safely installed in her rightful place as one of the top forces on the WTA tour.

THE PREDICTION

This looks fairly straightforward for Iga Swiatek, who is not the kind of player to take her foot off the gas in a dead rubber situation. The Pole knows better than most the importance of maintaining momentum after her remarkable winning streak in the first half of the season included four Masters titles and a Grand Slam and she will be keen to take a spotless record into the least four. Coco Gauff will be desperate to leave Fort Worth with at least one win under her belt but her remaining matches in singles and doubles are both against tournament favourites, which could leave quite the sting. Iga Swiatek has won all four of their matches in straight sets, including three this year, and backing the Pole to make that 5-0 looks reasonable here.
