THE LOWDOWN

World number one Iga Swiatek made it 3-0 in the group stages without dropping a set after a one-sided contest with Coco Gauff on Saturday. The 21-year-old qualified for the WTA Finals with over double the ranking points o next-best world number two Ons Jabeur and she remains the clear favourite to lift a first WTA Finals trophy on Monday, which would be her ninth title this year. Swiatek set this century’s winning streak record at 37 matches earlier this season, winning six titles on the bounce, and she won two more Grand Slam titles at Roland-Garros and the US Open.

World number seven Aryna Sabalenka beat a beleaguered Jessica Pegula in straight sets to reach the semi-finals of the WTA Finals for the first time, with her debut last season seeing defeats to Maria Sakkari, Paula Badosa and a win over Iga Swiatek. The 24-year-old owns 10 WTA titles but her last came in the spring of 2021 in Abu Dhabi, with 2022 proving a hugely frustrating season until very recently. Sabalenka made the semi-finals of the US Open and took the first set from Swiatek before the Pole came back in three.

THE PREDICTION

Aryna Sabalenka beat Iga Swiatek in their first meeting on tour almost exactly a year ago but the Pole has more than turned the tables since. Swiatek leads Sabalenka 4-1 in their head-to-head record after wins this year at the Qatar Masters, Stuttgart Open, Italian Masters and US Open – all of which she won. This could be their closest match yet with Sabalenka coming back into her former level of tennis but the Belarussian still has some improving to do whilst Swiatek is comfortably at the peak of her powers. Back Swiatek to win outright here, with three sets about as likely as two.
