THE LOWDOWN

IGA SWIATEK

World number one Iga Swiatek proved a few doubters on Wednesday to overcome Jessica Pegula in two tight sets, by far her best display of the US Open so far. The 21-year-old won 37 matches on the spin earlier this season to claim six WTA titles in a row, most notably a second Grand Slam title from Roland-Garros and four Masters titles in Qatar, Indian Wells, Miami and Rome. The Pole has come away from near-perfection since Paris but after some choppy weeks she looks to have rediscovered her self-belief. Swiatek reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open back in January before a defeat to eventual runner-up Danielle Collins.

ARYNA SABALENKA

Former world number two Aryna Sabalenka has successfully defended her ranking points here in New York by reaching successive semi-finals, this time ousting an off-the-pace Karolina Pliskova in straight sets. The 24-year-old lost to eventual runner-up Leylah Fernandez at this stage last season and she has since largely struggled to find her notorious ruthlessness, despite reaching two tour finals, until very recently. Sabalenka also reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon last season, losing to Pliskova on that occasion.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a ruthless, fierce battle between two of the hardest hitters around so expect short points and plenty of power from both players. Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek only met for the first time last November, where the Belarussian won their round robin clash at the WTA Finals, but Swiatek has taken a quick lead in their head-to-head with three straight-set wins this season in the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open, the Stuttgart Open final and the semi-finals of the Italian Open – all of which she went on to win. Sabalenka’s level is significantly, in fact starkly, higher than their last encounter but Swiatek’s victory over Pegula was certainly something of a test passed on Wednesday and she can be backed to reach her third Grand Slam final here.
