THE PREDICTION

World number 14 Matteo Berrettini put in an assured performance on Monday to beat Nicolas Jarry in comfortable straight sets and he should be considered a dark horse for the title in New York. The 26-year-old reached the semi-finals here back in 2019 before defeat to eventual champion Rafael Nadal and he reached the Wimbledon final last season before a four-set defeat to Novak Djokovic. Hugo Grenier, also 26, set a career-high ATP world ranking of 119th this week after qualifying for the main draw of the US Open as a lucky loser and he took that opportunity with both hands by coming back from a set down to beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The Frenchman should struggle to break Berrettini’s enormous serve in this first meeting, though, and with the Italian looking fit we can start to project him as a second-weeker – especially as his last four Grand Slam exits have taken either Nadal or Djokovic to beat him. Back Berrettini to win in straight sets.
