THE PREDICTION

26-year-old Hubert Hurkacz has fallen back to world number 20 after losing his ranking points from finishing runner-up at last season’s Canada Masters. The Pole came close to upsetting an out-of-sorts Carlos Alcaraz in Toronto, taking the first set from the Spaniard before blowing a lead in the third as he continues to struggle putting matches away in 2023. Hurkacz came back from a set down to beat Thanasi Kokkinakis via three tiebreaks in a fierce first meeting at the Miami Open back in March and there is evidence to suggest something similar here after Kokkinakis qualified with two three-set wins this weekend. The 27-year-old has a similarly powerful game and, currently, similar issue with closing out matches that he has performed well in. A three-set defeat to Lorenzo Musetti last week in Toronto was one that got away and it seems likeliest that the Aussie may just miss out again here. Take Hurkacz to earn at least a set and add at least a tiebreak in the match.
