THE PREDICTION

World number nine Hubert Hurkacz continued his sudden penchant for clay with an impressive straight-sets win over a specialist on this surface in Daniel Altmaier. The 27-year-old completed his career surfaces set earlier this month with a maiden ATP title on clay at the Estoril Open and it took eventual runner-up Casper Ruud to oust him from the Monte-Carlo Masters most recently to suggest he has developed a variation of his powerful, fast-focused game for this time of year.

World number 13 Taylor Fritz is a much more natural all-court threat but he too is at his least effective, usually, on clay. The 26-year-old exerted more dominance on Sebastian Baez on Sunday, beating the Argentine for a fifth time on the spin, to reach the last 16 without dropping a set and he finished runner-up to Jan-Lennard Struff in Munich two weeks ago to bring form of his own into Madrid. Fritz leads Hurkacz 2-1 in their head-to-head after beating the Pole in the semi-finals of the United Cup early last season but Hurkacz has certainly been the player in the ascendency since. Back Hurkacz to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance and consider adding at least a tiebreak, with three of their six sets played requiring one.

TIP: HUBERT HURKACZ TO WIN A SET (AND OVER 0.5 TIEBREAKS)
