THE PREDICTION

World number nine Hubert Hurkacz doubled down on his blistering dismissal of Rafael Nadal with a hugely impressive straight-sets victory over clay specialist Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The 27-year-old claimed his first clay title at the Estoril Open last month, completing a full set of surfaces amidst his eight career ATP titles, and he has since proved that his significant improvements, on what was once clearly his weakest surface, are deliberate.

World number 19 Sebastian Baez will pose a similarly rugged test to Etcheverry with perhaps an extra dose of intensity after coming back from a set down to beat last season’s runner-up Holger Rune. The 23-year-old counts five clay titles amongst his six overall, including back-to-back from Rio and Santiago this year, and he can be terribly difficult to oust once he gathers some momentum. Hurkacz is a similarly tough player to break down once he finds confidence in a draw, making this first meeting between the two highly intriguing. Three sets seem likelier than two here so back seventh seed Hurkacz to earn at least one to leave the victor up to chance.
