THE PREDICTION

With the first two matches of this tie looking like fairly comfortable victories for Iga Swiatek and Lorenzo Musetti it is more than likely that Matteo Berrettini and Hubert Hurkacz will be contesting a level playing field at 1-1. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record after Berrettini overcame the Pole in four sets to reach the 2021 Wimbledon final but Hurkacz took their first meeting on a hardcourt in straight sets at the Miami Open in 2019. World number 10 Hurkacz has dropped one set this week to Alexander Bublik but an impressive win over Stan Wawrinka on Tuesday makes it three from three so far at the United Cup. World number 16 Berrettini was in the form of his life last summer, in fact the previous two summers, but injuries plagued him towards the end of 2022. A straight-sets victory over Casper Ruud on Tuesday is therefore hugely encouraging and also gives the Italian three wins from three after a doubles win alongside Camilla Rosatello.

This is one of the tougher matches to call on Wednesday, particularly because it is hard to know how fit Berrettini is, but back the Italian to earn at least a set or consider choosing a total of three sets as an alternative.
