THE PREDICTION
World number 48 Jack Draper looked in brilliant shape on his return to tour from an injury that saw him forced to retire from a third round match against eventual semi-finalist Karen Khachanov at the US Open last month. The 20-year-old stunned Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets the round before that unfortunate withdrawal and he can include the likes of Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz amongst his big-name results in what has been another hugely encouraging season. World number 11 Hubert Hurkacz is coming off a loss to the aforementioned Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals of the Astana Open two weeks ago and he has struggled with consistency practically all season long despite bright spots on winning the Halle Open and finishing runner-up at the Canada Masters.
The Pole is the favourite to win this first encounter with Draper and yet the rising star brings with him something of a an infallible air that makes an upset seem a reasonable outcome. The sensible call is taking Hurkacz to win at least a set and the reasonable risk is taking the same option in Draper’s favour.
