HUBERT HURKACZ – Two-time Masters champion
World number eight Hubert Hurkacz overcame a tough test by Denis Shapovalov in four sets to reach the round of 16 at Roland-Garros for the second time. The 27-year-old recently won his first ATP title on clay at the Estoril Open, completing his surfaces set amidst a total of eight career titles, and deep runs in Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome have helped change the narrative around his efficacy in these conditions.
Hurkacz’s best Grand Slam showing was a semi-final exit to Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon in 2021, one round on from ending Roger Federer’s career.
GRIGOR DIMITROV – Career-high ATP world ranking of third
World number 10 Grigor Dimitrov beat qualifier Zizou Bergs in four sets, over two days due to rain delays, to maintain a solid charge at Roland-Garros. The 33-year-old is through to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros for the third time but he has yet to progress any further, with semi-finals reached at each of the other three Grand Slams.
Dimitrov snapped a seven year trophy drought with victory at the Brisbane 500 in January and he finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner at the Miami Open back in March – beating Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals.
HUBERT HURKACZ VS GRIGOR DIMITROV PREDICTION
This promises to be a thrilling contest between Hubert Hurkacz’s pinpoint power and Grigor Dimitrov’s effortless shot-making. The Bulgarian has won each of their five previous encounters for a rather surprising 5-0 lead in their head-to-head but this first five-set clash will give Hurkacz plenty of opportunity to dig in.
Four of their five meetings have seen at least a tiebreak and four out of five have seen sets go both ways, including on clay at Monte-Carlo two years ago. Back Dimitrov to win at least two sets and add at least a tiebreak into the mix to leave the result up to chance. You could consider a one-off on this likely marathon to need a decider.
HUBERT HURKACZ VS GRIGOR DIMITROV TIP: GRIGOR DIMITROV TO WIN TWO SETS (AND OVER 0.5 TIEBREAKS)
