THE PREDICTION

World number nine Hubert Hurkacz beat Jack Draper in comfortable straight sets on Friday to get his Madrid Open campaign underway well and he changed the conversation on clay earlier this month, claiming a first title on his weakest surface in Estoril to show significant improvements. The 27-year-old can now count at least one title on each of the four typical tour surfaces amidst his career total of eight trophies and two of those came at Masters level; announcing himself as a serious plyer with victory at the 2021 Miami Open and adding a second last October in Shanghai.

World number 61 Daniel Altmaier is certainly the more comfortable in these conditions as an out-and-out clay specialist and he is yet to drop a set after stunning 31st seed Arthur Fils on Friday. The 25-year-old upset Jannik Sinner at Roland-Garros last summer to prove his credentials in these conditions but stringing successive results together has always been his main stumbling block. Back Hurkacz to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors to leave the result up to chance.
