THE PREDICTION

World number nine Holger Rune beat Marc-Andrea Huesler in straight sets on Thursday for a statement of intent as the top seed in Montpellier. The 19-year-old totally transformed his game on hardcourts late last season in a rapid ascent that culminated with winning his first Masters title at the Paris Masters at the hands of Novak Djokovic. Rune is the only player to have beaten Novak Djokovic since Roland-Garros last summer and that sort of level should see him safely through to the semi-finals here despite Gregoire Barrere’s strong week so far. The Frenchman stunned defending champion Alexander Bublik in three sets on Wednesday and a straight-sets victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili yesterday suggests he will be a tough test in this first meeting with Rune. The Dane can be backed to win in straight sets all the same but you could consider adding a tiebreak in for good measure, with three played amongst their respective matches so far this week.
