THE LOWDOWN
HARMONY TAN
24-year-old Harmony Tan provided one of the upsets of the first round at the Australian Open with a straight-sets victory over Yulia Putintseva on her debut in Melbourne. The Frenchwoman is up to a career-high WTA world ranking of 107th and she could break the top 100 with a win in the second round.
ELINA SVITOLINA
World number 17 Elina Svitolina needed a tiebreak in the second set but she ultimately beat Fiona Ferro comfortably on Monday. The former world number three struggled last season, by her lofty standards, but still managed to win a 16th career WTA title at the Chicago Women’s Open as well as reach an eighth career major quarter-final at the US Open.
THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Elina Svitolina has been something of a flat-track bully at Grand Slams over the years with reaching the second week an absolute must for someone of her quality. The Ukrainian is the solid favourite to win this match in straight sets but she has struggled to put players away in recent months and that makes taking her the outright winner a suitably cautious call.
