THE PREDICTION
World number 20 Grigor Dimitrov received a bye to the round of 16 at the Chengdu Open as the third seed here and he could be one to watch this week after enjoying some if his better form in recent years. The 32-year-old reached a first final since 2018 at the Geneva Open back in May and then made successive round of 16s at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, with kryptonite Alexander Zverev knocking him out of three tournaments this summer. World number 70 Juan Pablo Varillas has enjoyed his best season yet on tour but a straight-sets opener over a wildcard is far from the preparation needed to tackle Dimitrov for the first time. Dimitrov so often frustrates at tournaments of this level but he looks set to make it through to the semi-finals for another showdown with top seed Zverev. Back the Bulgarian to win in straight sets.
