THE LOWDOWN
GRIGOR DIMITROV
Former world number three Grigor Dimitrov is currently playing some of the best tennis of his long career to suddenly look a rank outsider at Wimbledon. The 32-year-old reached the semi-finals here back in 2014 during his peak period on tour that culminated with winning the ATP Finals in 2017 but he reached a first final on tour since 2018 last month in Geneva to suggest that a renaissance was in the offing. Dimitrov completely dismantled world number 10 Frances Tiafoe across two days’ play this weekend to reach the round of 16 without dropping a set.
HOLGER RUNE
World number six Holger Rune took the first set and then fought back well to overcome Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in five sets on Saturday, making full use of an absurd underarm serve buy his opponent in the deciding tiebreak. 20-year-old Rune reached the semi-finals of Queen’s three weeks ago to look competent on grass but the Dane, like Carlos Alcaraz, is still relatively unfinished on the surface as a player who prefers the slower clay. Rune has reached back-to-back quarter-finals at Roland-Garros, losing on both occasions to eventual runner-up Casper Ruud.
THE PREDICTION
It is hard not to get swept up by Grigor Dimitrov’s gorgeous tennis when he is playing at his best but the Bulgarian has so often faltered in these moments when faced by something fierce and that is exactly what Holger Rune brings to their first encounter. The Dane has plenty to learn on this surface at just 20 years old and his still-acclimatising body has let him down a few times after gruelling matches this year, with cramping contributing to his loss in the Monte-Carlo final and the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros last month. It is a small pool of one, but Rune has only won two five-set matches so far in his career and he lost to Ruud in Paris after his first marathon against Francisco Cerundolo. Dimitrov’s best chances at coming through here are pouncing early in the hope that Rune has not recovered but if the youngster has he should also try to stay objective, with his chances of winning increasing with each passing set. Always be cautious of the former world number three as one of the most unpredictable players on tour but back Dimitrov to earn at least two sets as the likelier of two very capable winners.
