THE PREDICTION

32-year-old Grigor Dimitrov moved back inside the top 20 after an impressive run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon and he recently reached a first final on tour since 2018 at the Geneva Open. The former world number three looks to be enjoying his tennis after bringing in an extra coach in Jamie Delgado and he should be considered an outsider for the title in Washington, or a deep run at least, after a solid start against Mackenzie McDonald. Dimitrov has already faced world number 55 Emil Ruusuvuori twice this season, winning both in straight sets at Roland-Garros and Queen’s, but this should be a more competitive clash in conditions that best suit the Finn. 24-year-old Ruusuvuori came back from a set down to beat 10th seed Yoshihito Nishioka on Tuesday to claim back-to-back wins on tour for the first time since June and his run to the quarter-finals at the Miami Open in March is proof of what he can do on a US hardcourt. Tale Dimitrov to win outright here with three sets about as likely as two.
