THE LOWDOWN
GRIGOR DIMITROV
Former world number three Grigor Dimitrov beat young Czech prospect Jiri Lehecka in four sets on Tuesday to reach the second round relatively unscathed. The 30-year-old claimed the last of his eight career ATP titles at the year-end ATP Finals back in 2017 but he has since reached the semi-finals of the US Open and last season’s Indian Wells in brief flashes of brilliance. The Bulgarian also made the semi-finals here in Melbourne in his career year of 2017.
BENOIT PAIRE
32-year-old Benoit Paire overcame in-form Thiago Monteiro in five sets on Tuesday for a first tour-level win since the first round of the Sofia Open last September. The world number 56 set a career-high ATP world ranking of 18th back in 2018 but his form has plummeted along with his ranking over the last few years. Paire last won a second round Grand Slam match at Wimbledon in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
Two of the most unpredictable players on the ATP tour meet here ready to ruin an accumulator, so whatever you do with this match make it a one-off. Benoit Paire leads their head-to-head record 2-1 with wins at the US Open a decade ago and their most recent meeting at the Tokyo Open way back in 2015, so this is as good as a first meeting between two silky shot-makers. If both are fit, firing and Benoit Paire turns up to play this could be the best match of the day for entertainment but the Frenchman is a law unto himself, sometimes selves. Take Dimitrov to win outright for a sensible pick or go rogue for this match to see five sets of madness. Be warned, though, that if the going is too tough for Paire he has recent form for finding a way out of a match.
