THE PREDICTION
This match-up between two of the most unpredictable players on the ATP tour promises to be a thriller on Tuesday but any sort of prediction would be based largely on guesswork. Former world number three Grigor Dimitrov possesses one of the most eye-catching, devastaing games of his generation but the 31-year-old can only seem to find it three or four times a season ever since his ATP Finals success back in 2017. Dimitrov has reached the semi-finals at three Grand Slams: Wimbledon in 2014, here in Melbourne in 2017 and more recently at the US Open in 2019. Arguably, the Bulgarian has performed most consistently at the Australian Open, with his best recent run here ended in the quarter-finals by -you guessed it – Aslan Karatsev in 2021. Karatsev was a total unknown here two years ago before a stupendous run to the semi-finals as a qualifier, on his debut, and it took eventual champion Novak Djokovic to stop him. After an almost equally-remarkable depreciation last season, the Russian reached the semi-finals of the Pune Open last week in an encouraging return to winning ways.
THE LOWDOWN
Karatsev and Dimitrov share a 1-1 head-to-head record after a win apiece in 2021. Both matches saw sets go both ways and it is likely that this third encounter follows suit, with moments ahead for both players. Leave this match as far away from an accumulator as you can but definitely watch if you can. If forced to choose, back Dimitrov to edge this over five sets but – as aforementioned – that pick is almost 100% guesswork.
