THE LOWDOWN

Germany are through to the Davis Cup Finals after winning their first two ties 2-1 apiece against France and most recently Belgium in front of home crowds in Hamburg. Jan-Lennard Struff proved once again that he is a better player than his current deflated world ranking of 132nd, especially on clay, by ousting a spirited Zizou Bergs in the opening clash. Oscar Otte lost his second match of the week despite playing well against a much-improved David Goffin, although the 29-year-old must be commended for stepping in as first option at short notice once Alexander Zverev pulled put. Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz make up an excellent doubles duo, one of the best in the group stage, who overcame Belgium’s duo from a set down to seal the tie.

Australia are also safely through to the Davis Cup Finals with two ties won and just one defeat from their first six fixtures, with Jason Kubler falling to Richard Gasquet in the opener against France on Thursday. Alex de Minaur overcame Benjamin Bonzi in a gutsy three-set win to level the tie, setting up Wimbledon champions Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell to seal the win 2-1 with a straight-sets victory over Nicolas Mahut and Arthur Rinderknech.

THE PREDICTION

This is an intriguing dead rubber on Sunday between Australia, who have the better overall options in the likes of De Minaur and perhaps even in the doubles, and host nation Germany who will have a partisan crowd in celebratory mood in Hamburg. With both nations through some of the onus may seep out of the away side here, with Jan-Lennard Struff likely to make it 3-0 this week on his favoured surface to beat Jason Kubler. Alex de Minaur should be able to oust Oscar Otte fairly comfortably, although the German is well capable of outperforming in front of home fans, to likely leave the tie at 1-1 coming into the decider. On recent tour form, Ebden and Purcell should be able to edge things there but Krawietz and Puetz will have a fierce backing that should energise them as much as sap the Aussie pair. If Struff wins the opening fixture, Germany should go on to win here. Back them at outright or risk the 2-1 outright score.
