THE LOWDOWN
GAEL MONFILS
35-year-old Gael Monfils suffered more than most players with the covid-19 outbreak’s suspension of the 2020 season as he had just found form enough to win back-to-back tournaments in Montpellier and Rotterdam. The world number 19 then struggled to produce his best, awe-inspiring shot-making without a crowd to applaud it. The latter half of last year saw stadiums return to normal and with it some strong form for the former world number six, who finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner at the Sofia Open last October. Monfils won Adelaide 1 last week without dropping a set, beating Karen Khachanov in the final.
FEDERICO CORIA
29-year-old Federico Coria set a career-high ATP world ranking of 61st last summer with another decent showing on the clay swing culminating with a first career ATP final as he finished runner-up to Casper Ruud at the Bastad Open. The Argentine enjoyed plenty of success on the Challenger circuits too but he lost in the first round of three out of four Grand Slams.
THE PREDICTION
Monfils met Coria for the first time on court at the very same stage of last season’s US Open for a comfortable three-set victory and much the same can be expected here. The 35-year-old ended last year in excellent form, almost winning his 11th ATP title, and then won it this season instead. His days of contending for titles at Grand Slams are long passed now but Monfils will be a handful in Melbourne and draw plenty of crowds with it whilst he does.
