THE LOWDOWN

GAEL MONFILS

World number 20 Gael Monfils produced a stunning performance against Alexander Bublik, with the Kazakh playing far better than a 6-1, 6-0, 6-4 result suggests. The 35-year-old has conceded just 10 games over two matches so far and he looks to be vastly enjoying his time on the court in Melbourne, making him a sudden dark horse for the latter stages after an 11th title won at Adelaide 1 two weeks ago. Monfils is a two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist with a quarter-final in 2016 his best showing here in Melbourne.

CRISTIAN GARIN

World number 19 Cristian Garin has already played 10 sets in Melbourne as he continues to struggle to find his best tennis, although his quality is clearly there in the key moments after two five-set wins. The 25-year-old has five career ATP titles on his favoured clay but he reached the round of 16 last season at Wimbledon as well as Roland-Garros with a strong game for all surfaces.

THE PREDICTION

It is very hard to not get caught up in the joy of watching a fully fit and firing Gael Monfils launching himself around the court but his performances so far in Melbourne warrant hype. The former world number six is playing some of the best tennis of his career this year, and he was doing the same back in 2020 just before the covid-19 pandemic suspended a very promising season for the Frenchman. With that disappointment passed, he looks the fair favourite to overcome a dogged competitor in Cristian Garin. The Chilean has been pushed hard so far as he trues to get up to speed on this surface but if Monfils plays like he did against Bublik, with all the trick shots and madness left well in, he can win this in straight sets – just as he did in their first meeting with a victory at the ATP Cup back in 2020. Take Monfils outright here, which remains the wise if quite unimaginative pick.
