This should be an entertaining match on Monday and one of the bigger crowds of the day between former world number six Gael Monfils and man-of-the-moment Christopher Eubanks. 36-year-old Monfils is still on a steady return to tour life after a long injury lay-off this season but two wins and a three-set defeat at the Washington Open this week was hugely encouraging. 27-year-old Eubanks comes into Toronto at a career-high ATP world ranking of 29th after blossoming at Wimbledon, stunning both Cam Norrie and Stefanos Tsitsipas before a remarkable five-set battle went Daniil Medvedev’s way. A straight-sets defeat to Jordan Thompson in the round of 16 in Washington this week was not in the new script for the American but he looks able to blast Monfils off the court in this first meeting between the two. It will be fascinating to see what Eubanks can do across the hardcourt swing after suddenly finding his niche on grass but take the American to win outright here.
