THE LOWDOWN
FRANCISCO CERUNDOLO
World number 103 Francisco Cerundolo was in control of his match against 16th-seed Reilly Opelka before the American was forced to retire from the second set. 23-year-old Cerundolo overcame in-form Tallon Griekspoor in the first round for two really impressive results on hardcourts as he and his younger brother Juan Manuel continue to surprise at the Miami Open.
GAEL MONFILS
Former world number six Gael Monfils was in a battle with Oscar Otte but the 35-year-old’s experience told with an eventually comfortable straight-sets victory after winning the first set tiebreak 11-9. The Frenchman was at his best, most insatiable form at the Australian Open back in January in a run to the quarter-finals ended by Matteo Berrettini over five sets, and he beat Daniil Medvedev in three at this stage of Indian Wells last week for a first result over a world number one since 2009.
THE PREDICTION
In-form Gael Monfils could have progressed past the round of 16 at Indian Wells last time out were it not for drawing red-hot Carlos Alcaraz too soon but the Frenchman won his 11th career ATP title at the start of the season and he has form enough to come through this tough test well. Francisco Cerundolo and his brother Juan Manuel have form for almost empowering one another through tournaments but both look set to lose at this stage to Monfils and Frances Tiafoe, respectively. Monfils should be winning this in two but Cerundolo’s performances this week warrant caution, making the outright option the sensible call.
