THE PREDICTION

23-year-old Francisco Cerundolo will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 36th no matter the outcome of this quarter-final but the Argentine will be feeling like he can win a first ATP title this weekend after stunning the top seed Casper Ruud in straight sets. Cerundolo has impressed across all surfaces this season with a run to the semi-finals of the Miami Open, eventually halted by Ruud, and a mighty performance against Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon on grass last time out. Clay remains his brad and butter, though, and he looks the slightest favourite in this tough first meeting with a perhaps resurgent Aslan Karatsev. The Russian set a career-high ATP world ranking of 14th as recently as February but after losing his 2021 Australian Open points, where he miraculously reached the semi-finals as a qualifier, he has drifted back to world number 40. Wins over Lorenzo Sonego and Hugo Gaston are his first back-to-back since this season’s Australian Open and that suggests he could be making a welcome return from some seriously poor form over the last few months.

There are some similarities between these players games that should make for a thriller. Back Cerundolo to win at least a set for a suitably cautious addition to an accumulator or risk three sets as a one-off.
